Sports and adventures all year round
Welcome to the bobsleigh and luge track “Sigulda” – a place where sports meet adventures, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes of Sigulda and the Gauja. The track operates year-round, but winter is the season when it comes alive the most – the track is suitable for high-level international competitions in bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge, as well as for organizing local competitions and training. Every season, international and national competitions take place here, and it is the training home for Latvian and foreign athletes – bobsledders, skeletonists, and luge racers of various age groups.
The history of the track dates back to the end of the 19th century, when Prince Nikolai Kropotkin, who developed Sigulda as a resort and called it the “Switzerland of Vidzeme”, built a 900 m long ice road with one turn on his manor grounds. This artificially created ice track was the first luge track in the entire Baltics. As the track developed, the first bobs were also imported from abroad, and local enthusiasts started making their own sleds based on those models.
The design of the modern artificial ice track was carried out by the Leipzig Sports Facilities Scientific and Technical Center. Construction was done by the Yugoslav company "Graming" based in Sarajevo. The first stage of the track was put into operation in 1986. Its length is 1200 + 220m.
There is another interesting fact related to the former Yugoslavia and the Sigulda track – in 1984, the mascot of the Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games was the wolf cub Vučko, whose name is now widely known for the soft sleds, which all adrenaline and fun lovers can now enjoy on the bobsleigh and luge track “Sigulda” every weekend with entertainment rides (except during competitions). These entertainment rides, available to everyone, take place with the vučko, skeletonbob, and ice rafting in winter, while in the summer season – we invite you to dive into a positive and unforgettable one-minute adrenaline journey, riding the summer bob through 13 turns at speeds up to 85 km/h.
