History of the Track

The history of the track began as early as the end of the 19th century, when Prince Nikolai Kropotkin, who developed Sigulda as a resort and called it the “Switzerland of Vidzeme”, built a 900 m long ice road with one turn on his manor territory. This artificially created ice track was the first luge track in the entire Baltics. As the track developed, the first bobsleighs began to be imported from abroad, and local enthusiasts started making sleds themselves based on their example.

The design of the modern artificial ice tracks was carried out by the Leipzig Sports Construction Scientific and Technical Center. Construction was done by the Yugoslav company "Graming" based in Sarajevo. The first stage of the track was put into operation in 1986. Its length is 1200 + 220 m. From the start estacade viewing platform, you can see not only the Gauja valley, but also the panorama of the city and the bobsleigh track. Number of turns: 16, maximum possible speed: 125 km/h.

Since September 2022, the bobsleigh and luge track "Sigulda" has been a sports center of SIA “Latvian National Sports Centre” (LNSC). LNSC provides modern, high-quality and multifunctional sports infrastructure, managing and developing the national sports centers – the bobsleigh and luge track "Sigulda", the tennis center "Lielupe", the sports center "Mežaparks" and the culture and sports center “Daugava Stadium” – Daugava Ice Hall, Daugava Stadium, Daugava Athletics Arena. Currently, the Latvian National Sports Centre is implementing the construction of an athletics and football training field and the sports hall for team sports, which is under construction.
