at the bobsleigh and luge track "Sigulda"

The bobsleigh and luge track "Sigulda" is suitable for hosting high-level national and international competitions in bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge. Every season, international and national competitions take place here, and it serves as a training home for Latvian and foreign athletes; bobsledders, skeleton racers, and lugers. The track also features an artificial ice start ramp, which is a unique sports facility in the region. On the start ramp, athletes have the opportunity to train their start runs in bobsleigh and skeleton and their start pushes in luge. The ramp can also be used during the summer, ensuring continuous training for luge athletes with roller sleds to practice their start pushes.

Bobsleigh

Bobsleigh is a winter sport in which teams (two or four people) race down specially designed bobsleigh tracks in sleds for speed. A modern track must be 1200-1300 meters long, with at least 15 turns. Speeds on the track can reach up to 140 km/h. The first bobsleigh competition took place in 1884 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where there is still a bobsleigh track today.

Latvia's bobsleigh traditions began during the Soviet era. The best Soviet pilots of that time were from Latvia. Currently, only two-man bobsleigh competitions can be held at the Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track.

Skeleton

Skeleton is a winter sport in which an athlete speeds headfirst down an ice track, lying on their stomach on a sled. Skeleton originated in the 1880s in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In skeleton, the athlete's weight must not exceed 115 kilograms, and the skeleton sled's weight must not exceed 43 kilograms. In women's competitions, these weights are 92 and 29 kilograms, respectively.

At first glance, skeleton races may seem similar to luge, but these two sports have almost nothing in common. It's no coincidence that skeleton falls under the Bobsleigh Federation. Those who think skeleton is more dangerous than luge are mistaken. In fact, dangerous crashes occur much more often in luge than in skeleton.

Luge

Luge is a winter sport in which one or two athletes race down specially designed tracks in sleds against the clock. Today, luge is seen as one of the fastest, most technical, and strongest sports in Latvia. The winner in luge is the athlete who achieves the best combined time over two or four runs.

The newest discipline in luge is the team relay, where 4 athletes compete — a women's singles luger, a men's singles luger, and a doubles team.

Start Ramp

On September 17, 2009, a new artificial ice start ramp was opened at the Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track, providing better opportunities for lugers, bobsledders, and skeleton athletes to prepare for various competitions, as well as increasing the interest of foreign athletes in training at the Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track.

There are fewer than 10 artificial ice start ramps in the world. The Sigulda ramp is one of the most modern and highest quality in the world.

The First World Cup in Para-bobsleigh in Latvia

In December 2023, along with the regular European Cup stage in bobsleigh, the first World Cup stage in para-bobsleigh in Latvia was also held at the "Sigulda" bobsleigh and luge track, including athletes from such exotic countries as Australia, Nigeria, and South Africa. The victory was claimed by Latvian athlete Arturs Klots.

Organizing and hosting such a high-level competition confirms that the track is ready to welcome top-level athletes from all over the world and support sports for people with mobility impairments.
