BTA Daugava Athletics Arena

BTA Daugava Athletics Arena is the new sports hub of  National Sports Centre of Latvia . The new athletics arena was commissioned at the end of 2023, and it was opened to everyone who wants to do sports from the beginning of January 2024. The multifunctional athletics arena is a highly anticipated project that provides the most modern training and competition conditions for professional athletes, and also creates conditions and opportunities to comprehensively develop children’s and youth sports, as well as meet the needs of Paralympic sport. The building’s multifunctionality also provides conditions for cultural events – concerts, exhibitions and various gatherings – as well as a meeting place for participants of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

The athletics arena is primarily intended for training and competitions in athletics disciplines; at other times – for team sports: volleyball, floorball, handball and futsal. The arena has spacious changing and rest rooms for athletes, coaches and referees, massage rooms, a sauna, first-aid and doping control rooms, rooms for competition organizers and sports equipment storage rooms. For spectators’ convenience, stands are provided, the layout of which can be changed depending on the type of event, with availability of more than 1,600 seats. Meanwhile, on the north side of the building there is a bobsleigh start ramp for training needs.

Arena building and architecture

The new arena was designed and built as a free-standing three-storey building. On the north facade, at the level of the 2nd floor, the building is connected to the bobsleigh start training ramp. Dynamic elements are used in the building’s architecture, with expressive canopies on the end facades. The volume projection toward the driveway into the territory is emphasized by the northwestern supports – a canopy that simultaneously forms an awning over the main entrance. Meanwhile, a large glazed area has been created on the western facade of the building, because this part of the building houses all the main arena service areas – athletes’ recreation, massage, first aid, etc.

On the arena’s southern facade facing A. Deglava Street, an accent was designed by depicting a stylized cardiogram – a dynamic heartbeat line that symbolizes sporting energy and strength, and also associatively resembles the silhouette of Riga’s skyline.
